No. 4 Softball sweeps opening day of Rattler Invitational

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — There was Alex Rodriguez's grand slam, Nicole Sardelich's near inside-the-park homer, and a whole lot of cheering from St. Mary's dugout Friday evening.

No. 4-ranked St. Mary's Softball routed Tarleton State 10-4 in its opening game of the Rattler Invitational before getting past No. 13 Central Oklahoma 7-3 at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's.

The Rattlers (13-1) made quick work of Tarleton State (9-5), jumping to an 8-1 lead after two innings thanks largely to Rodriguez's two-out, bases-clearing bomb in the first. Rodriguez drew two walks in her other three plate appearances, finishing 1 for 4 with four RBIs. Vidrine had two RBIs, two doubles and two stolen bases, while Sardelich and Haley Richter also totaled two RBIs apiece.

The freshman Hope Russell went the distance in the circle, striking out two and scattering four hits to improve to 7-0.

Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone was just as stellar in the nightcap, striking out seven to improve to 5-1 in her senior season.

St. Mary's took what seemed to be a comfortable 4-0 lead by the third inning, but Central Oklahoma put a scare in the Rattlers by drawing within one with a three-run fourth. But St. Mary's scored two of their own in the bottom of the frame for some cushion, and sixth-inning RBI double from Richter made it 7-3.

Richter and Gutierrez Touchtone each had two RBIs in the game. Richter ended up 3 for 3, falling a home run short of a cycle.

With the victory over the Bronchos (5-3), St. Mary's improved to 4-0 against ranked teams this season. St. Mary's also improved to 3-0 at home.

The Rattlers will be back in action Saturday when they take on Tarleton State at 2 p.m. at the Softball Stadium.
