Rattlers nip TAMIU, take over prime position in Heartland race

By Kaeleen Zeleznak | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LAREDO, Texas — St. Mary's Men's Basketball staged a second-half comeback Thursday evening to come out on top of the Texas A&M International Dustdevils, 61-57, for a big-time Heartland Conference victory entering the stretch run.

The win moves the Rattlers to 12-5 in Heartland Conference play, tying them for first place with Rogers State in the overall league standings and in sole possession of first among teams eligible for the Heartland Conference Tournament. Three games remain in the Rattlers' regular-season slate.

Another big night from Marvin Binney (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) gave the Rattlers an offensive spark, as he scored a team-high 22 points. Kriston Minor (Jr., Huntsville, Texas) contributed seven points off the bench, while J.J. Bolton (Sr., Beaumont, Miss.), Isaiah Matthews (R-Sr., Texas City, Texas) and Bryce Smith (R-Jr., Corpus Christi) all chipped in six points apiece in a game that epitomized a "team" effort.

Leading the way defensively for the Snakes was Justin Alexander (Sr., San Antonio), who pulled down eight boards, followed by Marvin Whitt (Sr., Birmingham, Ala.) with five rebounds.

The Rattlers had a hard time getting shots to fall during the first half, going 9-of-25 from the field and 3-of-12 from beyond the arc.

The squad was able to cut down a one-time 10-point deficit to go to the break trailing 29-24.
Coming back from the break, the Rattlers went to work, quickly tying the game at 29 off of a 3-point shot from Bolton and layup from Matthews.

Despite the Rattlers stretching their lead to eight at the 3:30 mark, the Dustdevils were able to make it a tight game all the way into the final minutes.

A shot from Binney put the Rattlers up 55-51, which was answered by a 3-point shot from the Devils, putting the score at 56-55 with 30 seconds on the clock. Binney then hit two shots from the charity stripe to give the Rattlers a 57-54 advantage.

The Dustdevils drove down the court to hit a shot in the paint, posting the score at 57-56 with about 10 seconds left. With five seconds on the clock, the Rattlers were fouled immediately upon inbounding the ball, sending Whitt to the free-throw line for two shots, which he sank to seal the Rattlers' 61-57 victory over the Dustdevils.

The Rattlers head up to Dallas to face the Patriots of Dallas Baptist on Monday at 7 p.m.
