Rattlers take charge in OT, survive scare from DBU

By Kaeleen Zeleznak | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

DALLAS — A little bit of cold weather wasn't enough to keep the St. Mary's Rattlers from surviving a knock-down, drag-out, overtime fight against the Dallas Baptist Patriots, 83-77, on Monday evening.

And it leaves the Rattlers one victory shy of hosting next week's Heartland Conference Tournament.

Over the final 14 seconds in overtime, the Rattlers took charge by coming up with two defensive stops — a strip from Marvin Whitt and a charge by Justin Alexander — and Whitt sank three free throws to seal the game before a packed house at the Burg Center.

The matchup saw the game tied 11 different times, and the lead changing 15 times, with the largest lead of the game belonging to the Rattlers during the overtime period.

For the third straight victory, Marvin Binney (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) was the Rattlers' leading scorer, posting 22 points. Isaiah Matthews (R-Sr., Texas City, Texas) recorded 18 points, while Kriston Minor (Jr., Huntsvile, Texas) chipped in 12 points.

The Rattlers dominated the boards, outrebounding the Patriots 15-4 at the half and 31-23 overall. Alexander (Sr., San Antonio) pulled down a team-high nine boards, followed by Whitt (Sr., Birmingham, Ala.) and Binney who pulled down four rebounds a piece.

The game stayed tight throughout the duration of regulation, seeing the final minute turn into a foul fest. The Rattlers went 7 of 8 from the line in the final minute, giving them a 71-70 advantage with 19 seconds to play.

Dallas Baptist then took their turn at the foul stripe, hitting one shot to tie the game at 71-71 with 14 seconds to play.

The Rattlers inbounded and made their way down the court where they would miss a jumper and tip the rebound out of bounds, giving the Patriots a final offensive possession with two seconds left to play. A narrowly missed buzzer-beater from the Patriots sent the two squads into overtime.

The Rattlers struck first and led for the duration of overtime play. With 40 seconds on the clock and the Rattlers leading 78-77, the Patriots were sent to the foul line where they missed two free throws.

Binney hit two clutch free shots with 14 seconds remaining to give the Rattlers an 80-77 lead over the Patriots.

After inbounding the ball, the Patriots turned over the ball to Whitt, who drew a foul and sank a shot from the charity stripe to give the Rattlers an all-important four-point lead at 81-77.

Alexander took a charge to give the Rattlers all the momentum, and possession of the ball with five seconds to play.

The Patriots immediately fouled Whitt, sending him to the free-throw line where he would go 2 of 2 to seal the victory for the Rattlers, 83-77.

This win puts the Rattlers at the top of the conference with a 13-5 conference record and 16-9 overall.

The Rattlers will return to Bill Greehey Arena for the home stretch of regular-season play Thursday evening, when they will face Lubbock Christian at 7:30 p.m.

St. Mary's needs just one more victory to earn the right to host the Heartland Conference Tournament, as a trio of eligible teams — St. Edward's, Texas-Permian Basin and UA Fort Smith — all stand with 11-7 conference records. Lubbock Christian and Rogers State each trail St. Mary's by a single game for the regular-season conference championship but are ineligible for postseason play due to their provisional status in the Heartland Conference.
