#4 Softball opens at home with home-run derby over OLLU

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Coming off their first loss of the season earlier this week, No. 4 Rattler Softball made amends, blasting its way to a 6-2 victory that included three home runs at the Park at St. Mary's Wednesday night over San Antonio rival Our Lady of the Lake University.

In what was their home opener, the Rattlers trailed for a majority of the game, but first went up early in the first inning after Nicole Sardelich (Sr., Angleton Texas) led off the affair with a triple in the first at-bat. She was brought home by Taylor Vidrine (Sr., San Antonio) who proved to be a key player on the night.

Despite her three strikeouts on the night, Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone (Sr., San Antonio) surrendered two runs in the top of the third inning, which saw the Snakes' trail 2-1.
Haley Richter (Sr., Hondo, Texas) leveled the game at two apiece after sending a solo shot to left in the fifth.

The bats came alive for the Rattlers in the bottom of the sixth when Sardelich brought home Daniele Nash (Sr., San Antonio) to put the nationally ranked Snakes ahead after a miscue from the OLLU (7-3) left fielder to keep the inning alive.

It was then Vidrine's time to shine as she took the very next pitch over the wall in dead-center to push the St. Mary's lead to a score of 5-2.

Jourdan Alvarez (So., Houston) did her best to follow up Vidrine's act, sending a solo shot of her own over the outfield fence to push the lead to four, 6-2, in her first career homer.

Freshman Hope Russell, (Fr., Vidor, Texas) after coming in to relieve Gutierrez Touchtone, would see the game out, retiring all batters she faced to give the Rattlers' their 11th win of the season, improving to 11-1 overall.

The win capped off a great birthday for head coach Donna Fields, as her team will now carry their momentum into the weekend where they will host the Rattler Invitational in their own backyard at the Softball Stadium.
