Softball's perfect start ends with loss to Washburn

DURANT, Okla. — St. Mary's Softball's hopes of coming home undefeated were crushed Sunday morning as the Rattlers suffered their first season loss to Washburn 10-2, ending a 10-game winning streak.
 
The Rattlers fell to a respectable 10-1 on the season after the Ichabods (4-3) stumped their perfect 10-0 start to the season in five innings Sunday in the finale of the Southeastern Oklahoma Regional Invitational.
 
Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone (Sr., San Antonio) was charged with the loss, putting her at a 5-1 record on the season.
 
The Ratters started off on an offensive attack as Hannah Michel (Fr., Giddings, Texas) tripled to center to bring in Nicole Sardelich (Sr., Angleton, Texas) to put the Snakes up 1-0.
 
But the lead was short-lived as the Ichabods spurred for a six-run second inning for a 6-1 lead.
 
Kristi Rangel (Fr., Kingsville, Texas), who took over the mound and tossed three innings, put up the Rattlers' final run on the day in a rally attempt in the third off an RBI-single.
 
The Rattlers would be held scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings while Washburn added four more runs to claim the run-rule off 13 hits and three Rattler errors.
 
StMU Softball returns home for its home opener against Our Lady of the Lake at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Softball Stadium.
 
The game will feature the last of the Win Spurs Superbox Seats promotion that will give St. Mary's students a chance to win two pairs of tickets to a San Antonio Spurs game in the university's superbox suite.
