Rattlers' comeback falls short after Marquez forces OT

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

ODESSA, Texas — Monster games from Dezirae Elias, Kiara Etheridge and Morgan Pullins were not enough for St. Mary's Women's Basketball on Saturday.

Following a ferocious comeback by the Rattlers that saw them overcome a 14-point second-half deficit to force overtime, Texas-Permian Basin survived the extra session to win 89-85 before its home crowd.

Pullins trimmed the deficit to two, 87-85, on a mid-range jumper with eight seconds left in OT, but UTPB's Giselle Loya hit her free throws on the other end for a four-point lead that effectively sealed the victory with five seconds remaining. Elias misfired on a desperation attempt at the buzzer.

Elias seemingly could not otherwise miss from long range, connecting on six 3-point attempts as part of a season-high 27-point scoring outburst. Kiara Etheridge added 26 points on 12-of-18 shooting to go along with nine rebounds, while Morgan Pullins had her 17th double-double with 19 points and 13 boards.

With the loss, St. Mary's drops to 13-10 on the season and 7-8 in Heartland Conference play, falling to a tie for sixth place with Texas A&M International. The two teams are tied for fourth in the race for the Heartland Tournament, as provisional members Lubbock Christian and Oklahoma Christian are not yet eligible for postseason play. UTPB improved to 13-9 and 7-7 with the victory.

Kealani Marquez capped off St. Mary's comeback by forcing OT when she hit a jumper with 28 seconds left in regulation to even the score at 74-74.

Earlier, St. Mary's had gone on a 13-6 run to draw to within two, 63-61, with 6:35 left after trailing by as many as 14 points early in the second half. UTPB, which trailed just once in the game, led 41-30 at the half.

St. Mary's returns to action Thursday in an important game against Texas A&M International. The Rattlers and Dustdevils will tip at 5:30 p.m. from the Kinesiology and Convocation Building in Laredo, Texas.
