Men's hoops take dramatic OT victory over UTPB

ODESSA, Texas — St. Mary's Men's Basketball logged a dramatic Valentine's Day treat for Rattler fans Saturday afternoon, claiming an overtime victory over Texas-Permian Basin, 89-84, to remain tied for the No. 1 spot in the Heartland Conference.
 
The Rattlers pulled out of a five-way tie for the No. 1 rank in the league with the win over UTPB which saw the Falcons show a fierce 15-point comeback to force extra minutes, improving StMU to 11-5 in Heartland Conference play and 14-9 overall.
 
The Rattlers' win created some separation to have them No. 1 in the league along with Rogers State, which is not eligible for postseason play, and UA Fort Smith.
 
The Heartland Conference now has a four-way tie for second place, which includes Texas-Permian Basin (15-9, 10-6 in conference).
 
Marvin Binney (Sr., Toronto, Canada) led the way with a game-high 23 points, which ties his career-high.
 
Three other starters also broke double-digits including Justin Alexander (Sr., San Antonio) with 17 points, Marvin Whitt (Sr., Birmingham, Ala.) with 14 points and Isaiah Matthews (RS-Sr., Texas City, Texas) with 11 points.
 
Kriston Minor (Jr., Corpus Christi, Texas) was close behind with nine points while JJ Bolton (Beaumont, Miss.) dominated the boards, pulling in a game-high 12 rebounds.
 
The Snakes controlled much of the game, going into the break up nine, 42-33. The Rattlers then pumped their lead to 15 two minutes into the final frame.
 
The Falcons then ignited a fierce comeback, evaporating the Rattlers' 15-point lead to bring it within four with 12:37 on the clock.
 
The Falcons went on a 12-0 run to gain their largest lead of the game with four with 3:51 left in the game, eventually ending regulation outscoring the Rattlers 45-36 in the second half.
 
The squads went into overtime tied 78-78 where the Rattlers turned on the afterburners to outscore the Falcons 11-6 in to end the dramatic game 89-84.
 
The Snakes remain on the road to take on Texas A&M International at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Laredo, Texas.
