SAN ANTONIO — In a highly contested crosstown rivalry match, No. 16 St. Mary's Women's Tennis ran away with a decisive 9-0 decision against NCAA Division I opponent Incarnate Word Thursday afternoon.

The match kicked off on the doubles' side of play with both vying to take city bragging rights.

The format was conducted by way of Division II regulations where each doubles match was totaled to the overall score.

Mariana Rong (Sr., Jinan, China) and Cristina Lopez (Jr., San Antonio) were up first for the Rattlers and saw off the team of Sadiq and Zemunik with an 8-2 victory.

In No. 2 doubles, Jamie Lee Denton (Jr., San Angleo, Texas) and Kaylin Kruseman (Fr., Houston) emulated their teammates, only dropping one game in their 8-1 victory over UIW's Savedra and Batchinsky.

To round out doubles play, the team of Felicity Delgado (Sr., Universal City, Texas) and Kerry Wiegand (Jr., San Antonio) defeated the Cardinals' Vatanadilok and Dedic 8-6 to give the Rattlers' a commanding 3-0 lead heading into singles action.

Only needing two wins from six singles matches, St. Mary's came out of doubles on a mission to earn the victory over the Cardinals.

Rong and freshman Tyra Timm (Johannesburg) did just that at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively, both taking straight-set victories, Rong over Sadiq 6-1, 6-1 and Timm over Zemunik 6-1, 6-2.

With victory intact, the Rattler' continued to pour it on as Kruseman came out victorious over UIW's Vatanadilok 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 4 match.

Joanie Bryant (Jr., San Antonio) turned in an impressive performance of her own, with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Batchinsky at No. 6.

Denton, after missing the previous match due to injury, returned to the single's lineup at No. 5, taking a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Dedic.

With the final match on court, Lopez battled back from an 8-4 deficit in the third-set tiebreaker to come out victorious 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) and ensured the sweep of the crosstown opponents.

The No. 16 Rattlers record now stands at 2-1 on the year and they will now be looking forward to starting off Heartland Conference play with a matchup against Texas-Permian Basin at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20 at Rohrbach Stadium.
