Rattlers fall in Round 2 of Battle of the Saints on the road

By Kaeleen Zeleznak | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

AUSTIN, Texas — After notching two big wins last week, St. Mary's Men's Basketball was knocked off its momentum Thursday night, falling to rival St. Edward's 78-64 but remain in a five-way tie for first place in the Heartland Conference.

"Every road game that we play, the team that we are playing will have their biggest crowd of the year there," said Coach Zeleznak of his team's road trip.

This prediction proved true Thursday evening in the finale of the 2015 Men's Basketball Battle of the Saints, as the Rattlers fell to the St. Edward's Hilltoppers 78-64 before a crowd of 688.

Leading the way for the Rattlers both offensively and defensively was JJ Bolton (Sr., Beaumont, Miss.) who posted a double-double, his first on the season, contributing eleven points and eleven boards.

Two other Rattlers scored in double-digits including Justin Alexander (Sr., San Antonio) who scored 16 points and Marvin Binney (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) who chipped in 13 points. Marvin Whitt (Sr., Birmingham, Ala.) and Isaiah Matthews (R-Sr., Texas City, Texas) chipped in nine and eight points, respectively.

Bolton led in rebounds for the Rattlers, pulling down eleven boards. Alexander contributed four rebounds while Matthews, Whitt, and Binney each chipped in three apiece.

The Rattlers (13-9, 10-5 in conference) and Toppers (17-6, 9-6 in conference) competed neck and neck for the first half of the first frame, seeing the game tied six times with the lead margin staying within one point.

With about nine minutes remaining in the half, the Toppers went on a 22-16 run, sending the Rattlers to halftime trailing 37-30.

Coming back from the break, the Toppers built upon their first-half momentum, jumping out to a ten-point lead, 44-34, just minutes into the half.

SEU's offense was connecting on all cylinders, going 10 of 18 beyond the arc to the Rattlers one of nine.

The Rattlers were unable to stymie the Toppers' momentum as they only saw the point margin shaved down to seven points at the 11-minute mark.

The Toppers continued to push their offense, extending their lead to fourteen points, posting a final score of 78-64.

The Rattlers head out on the road to face Texas-Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas Saturday at 3 p.m.
