Big third quarter spurs Rattler rout of Tarleton State

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — A big second half spurred St. Mary's Women's Basketball to its sixth straight win Saturday, as the Rattlers outgunned Tarleton State down the stretch to win 69-63 at Wisdom Gymnasium.

Down 29-27 at the break, the Rattlers (6-1) outscored the TexAnns 42-24 over the final two quarters to win going away.

Kiara Etheridge was 9 for 11 from the field in a 19-point performance, while Dezirae Elias — the Heartland Conference's reigning Player of the Week — scored 12. Arysia Porter chipped in 10 points, and Kealani Marquez added seven points and a team-high five assists off the bench.

After intermission, St. Mary's cleaned things up on all ends of the floor, shooting nearly 10 percent better in the second half — 53 percent to 45 — and was efficient at the line, going 7 for 9 after attempting just two foul shots in the first half.

The Rattlers' defense also picked it up after halftime, limiting Tarleton State to under 30 percent shooting in the frame — 7 of 25 — and 32.1 percent for the entire game.

Things looked to be trending in Tarleton State's favor as the final minutes of the first half ticked down, as a Truant Downes layup put the TexAnns up nine, 28-19, with 2:21 remaining. But the Rattlers closed the half on an all-important 8-1 run — including back-to-back 3-pointers from Haley Richter and LaBraile Fields in the final minute — to draw within two at the break.

Midway through the third quarter, St. Mary's took a 37-36 lead on a Kiara Etheridge layup with 5:50 to go and never trailed again.

The Rattlers will remain on the road when they take on Angelo State in a regional matchup on Dec. 13 in San Angelo, Texas. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
