@StMUWBB ground Jets in OT thriller

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

WICHITA, Kan. — Down by as many as 11 points in the first quarter and facing the prospect of losing a second consecutive conference game, the St. Mary's Rattlers persevered on the road against Newman in overtime 68-64, in the final game of the calendar year.

With 41 seconds left in regulation and the Rattlers up by four, it looked as if their comeback would be complete. But much like how the visitors endured throughout the evening, the Jets rallied late, tying the game at 59-59, with 12 seconds remaining on the clock. Moments later, it was Newman on the verge of victory following a steal that led to a layup opportunity that went unanswered as time expired.

Down by three halfway through the overtime period, the Rattlers battled back once more, ending the game on a 7-0 run courtesy of points from LaBraile Fields (Jr., Augusta, Georgia), Kiara Etheridge (Jr., San Antonio) and Dezirae Elias (Sr., Chandler, Ariz.).

Fields led the Rattlers with 20 points and five steals as Etheridge fell two rebounds shy of a double-double with 10 points and eight boards.

Arysia Porter (Fr., San Antonio) added 11 points and three steals while Mariah Lee (Sr., Houston, Texas) contributed well of the bench with seven points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Haley Richter (Sr., Hondo, Texas) provided additional firepower off the bench, converting 2-of-4 three-point attempts.

The Rattlers will travel to Oklahoma City to face Oklahoma Christian on Jan. 2 before heading back to San Antonio for a two-game homestand.
