Cold second half dooms Rattlers in loss to Newman

WICHITA, Kan. — St. Mary's could not overcome a poor-shooting second half in an 88-68 New Year's Eve loss to Newman on Thursday evening.
 
After taking a 43-38 lead into the half, St. Mary's saw Newman storm to a 25-7 run to start the second half that helped build a lead as large as 23 late in the game.
 
Isaiah Parros led the Rattlers' scoring attack with 15 points — including 12 in the first half — while Yanni Wetzell and Kriston Minor chipped in 13 and 12, respectively.  
 
After shooting 58.6 percent (17 of 29) from the floor in the first half, the Rattlers (5-6, 1-2 Heartland Conference) went ice cold in the second, shooting 21.2 percent (7 of 33) in the final frame. Things were just as inefficient from long range, where St. Mary's made just 1 of 9 3-pointers after going 6 for 11 in the first.
 
The Jets (8-3, 1-2), meanwhile, never cooled off, shooting above 50 percent in each half and 56.1 percent (32 of 57) from the floor for the game.
 
Newman also won the rebounding battle, 38-33.
 
St. Mary's will return to action Saturday, when it takes on Oklahoma Christian at 3 p.m. in Oklahoma City.
