Rattlers overcome slow start, win fifth straight

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's continues its winning ways after a 71-63 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville Wednesday night inside Bill Greehey Arena. The victory marks the fifth straight for the Rattlers in the young season as they took on a tough Javalina team that came in three games over .500.

The game began with the usually high octane Rattler offense stuck in neutral as they trailed by as much as seven early on. St. Mary's finished the opening period strong with a last second tip-in from Emily Troell (Sr., Destin, Fla.) that put the Snakes on top by three.

A&M-Kingsville rebounded by outscoring the Rattlers 20-11 in the second frame, taking a six-point advantage at the half. But it was not meant to be as Heartland Conference Player of the Week, Dezirae Elias (Sr., Chandler, Ariz.), and Kiara Etheridge (Jr., San Antonio) led the way combining for 27 of the Rattler points.

Once again, Haley Richter (Sr., Hondo, Texas) was a spark off the bench scoring 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field, including three from behind the three point line. Freshman Arysia Porter (San Antonio) was the other Rattler to finish in double-figures with 10 points, including some free throws at the end to ice the game.

Up next, the Rattlers will travel to Stephenville, Texas for a match up against the Texanns of Tarleton State on Dec. 5.
