Rattlers' outside shooting not enough as #11 MSU prevails late

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — St. Mary's Men's Basketball pushed No. 11-ranked Midwestern State to the brink in a 77-66 road loss Tuesday evening.

A Trey Hall 3-pointer gave the Rattlers a 54-51 lead with 10:20 remaining, but the Mustangs answered with an impressive 14-2 run that erased any thought of an upset.

Skyler Brooks scored a career-high 20 points — 17 of which came in the second half — to lead all scorers. Brooks was 7 of 14 from the floor and 6 of 9 from 3-point range, falling just one 3-pointer away from tying the modern-day single-game school record. Kriston Minor added 19 points in defeat.

St. Mary's (4-2) attempted to put a late scare in the Mustangs, as a Hall steal led to a Minor fastbreak layup that sliced the one-time nine-point deficit to six, 69-63, with 1:01 remaining.

But the Mustangs sealed the deal by going 4 of 5 at the foul line over the final minute as the Rattlers tried to extend the game.

Three Mustangs reached double figures, led by Bretson McNeal's 15 points.

St. Mary's overcame a pedestrian 34.3-percent shooting percentage (23 of 67) by firing 11 3-pointers in 29 attempts. Brooks and Minor accounted for 10 of them, while Hall represented the other.

The Rattlers' perimeter defense was equally stellar, limiting the Mustangs to 3-of-13 shooting.

MSU made its mark in the paint, however, winning the battle down low 42-20 and getting to the free-throw line with regularity, finishing 24 of 32 at the stripe.

St. Mary's will be back in action Friday when it hosts Eastern New Mexico at 7:30 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
