The Offense Awakens: Rattlers score season-high 99 to thump OPSU

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics

SAN ANTONIO — Thursday's slugfest between St. Mary's and Oklahoma Panhandle State featured 80 combined free throws, 64 fouls and 43 turnovers.

But for everything St. Mary's 99-86 victory lacked in pure beauty and finesse, it made up for in grit on a night the Rattlers posted their most points of the season.

The Rattlers led by as many as 24 points in the second half of a wire-to-wire victory, only to see things get mildly interesting when the Aggies trimmed the one-time massive lead to seven, 76-69, with 7:11 remaining.

But St. Mary's (5-4, 1-0 Heartland Conference) would allow the Aggies (6-2, 0-1) to draw no closer, holding off OPSU's furious rally that featured a 34-for-47 showing at the free-throw line.

Trey Hall led the Rattlers with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Kriston Minor also shined with 18 points, five boards and five assists. In all, six Rattlers hit double figures, including 13 from both Dimitri Peterson and Yanni Wetzell, 11 from Bryce Smith and 10 from Isaiah Parros. Peterson chipped in nine rebounds.

St. Mary's put on a dazzling offensive display, scoring a season-high 99 points on 59.4-percent shooting from the floor. Consistently breaking OPSU's full-court press, StMU scored 58 points in the paint and added 34 points off turnovers. The Rattlers also dominated the glass, outrebounding the Aggies 40-23, and had assists on 24 of their 38 field goals.

St. Mary's will return to action Saturday, when it hosts Lubbock Christian at 3 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
