KINGSVILLE, Texas — The St. Mary's Men's Basketball squad was unable to overcome a late second0half deficit as they fell 58-53 to the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas Monday night, dropping to 4-4 on the season.

Two Rattlers pulled down near double-doubles in the effort, with both Yanni Wetzell and Kriston Minor recording eight boards to go along with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Trey Hall and Bryce Smith also chipped in 10 points a piece.

The Rattlers contested the Javelinas' strong rebounding, pulling down 36 boards to the Javelinas' 37.

The squad collectively shot 50 percent from the foul stripe in comparison to the Javelinas' 10-of-12 shooting.

For the first minutes of the game, both the Rattlers and Javelinas played solid defense, keeping the score 3-2 in the Javelinas' favor for the opening five minutes. After a 13-4 run, the Javelinas advanced the score to 23-14 with five minutes left to play in the first frame. Before heading to the break, the Rattlers were able to make a run of their own, scoring 11 points to pull within three going into halftime trailing 28-25.

During the second half, the teams played point for point, tying the game four times and keeping within three points of each other for the opening 12 minutes of the frame. At the five-minute mark, the Javelinas began to pull away, sealing their 58-53 victory over the Rattlers.

The Rattlers open up Heartland Conference play at home beginning on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. in Bill Greehey Arena against Oklahoma Panhandle State. They will then face Lubbock Christian Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. before heading out on the road to begin the 2016 portion of their season.
