Defense dominates as Rattlers top Missouri S&T

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Men's Basketball used a relentless defensive effort to upend Missouri S&T 62-51 in the team's opener of the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic at Bill Greehey Arena.

The Rattlers (3-1) opened up a 17-0 lead to start Friday's game, and went seven minutes, 48 seconds before surrendering their first points on a 3-point field goal.

By then, it was seemingly too late, as the Rattlers had set the tone and continued to impose their will the rest of the game in a strong team showing.

Kriston Minor led the offensive charge with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while Yanni Wetzell and Trey Hall chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively. Hall had a team-high seven rebounds to go along with three blocks.

Freshman Dimitri Peterson, making his first collegiate start, played a significant role in establishing the Rattlers' presence, contributing five rebounds and four blocks to go along with nine points.

St. Mary's flirted with shooting 50 percent from the floor for the game, finishing 22 of 48 for a 45.8-percent clip. Missouri S&T (1-4) shot at a fraction of that, shooting 24.1 percent for the game — and just 19.4 percent in the all-important first half.

The Rattlers will resume tournament play Saturday, when they take on Missouri Western State at 3 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
