Minor's Miracle, Part Deux? Late strikes propel Snakes to victory

By Kaeleen Zeleznak | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

GOLDEN, Colo. — The Rattlers chalked up their first "W" of the season as they took down the Regis University Rangers, 67-64, in come-from-behind fashion Saturday evening.

Kriston Minor scored 13 points — including a trio of 3-pointers — over the final 3:13 to help St. Mary's climb out of an 11-point hole. Minor hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 36 seconds left to give the Rattlers (1-1) the lead for good with 36 ticks remaining.

After Minor's final 3-point shot, a forced turnover by Trey Hall eliminated the Rangers' final possession. A desperation foul from the Rangers sent Hall to the foul stripe, sealing the Rattlers' 67-64 victory over the Rangers.

Leading the charge for the Rattlers both offensively and defensively were Kriston Minor, scoring a team-high 23 points and pulling down five boards, and Isaiah Parros, who contributed 17 points and four rebounds.

Parros also led the Rattlers in steals with nine and assists with six, followed by Trey Hall and Bryce Smith, who chipped in three assists and one steal a piece.

The Rangers jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead within the opening two minutes of play and continued extending their lead throughout the half.

St. Mary's struggled to connect offensively as it tried to battle back from as much as a 14-point deficit in the first half, going 8 of 26 from the field and 4 of 15 from beyond the arc.

The Rattlers went to the break trailing the Rangers 37-24.

The second half saw the squad come out with some defensive energy, forcing turnovers and capitalizing on fast breaks to try and spark an offensive run.

The Rattlers didn't see a turning point until late in the second half when Minor began making shots fall, bringing the Rattlers within seven points with 2:32 on the ticker. The ball finally started rolling as Minor sunk three 3-pointers in a row, giving the Rattlers their first lead of the game with under one minute to play.

Minor has a history of late-game heroics at St. Mary's, delivering the famous, buzzer-beating 3-pointer dubbed "Minor's Major Miracle" that helped St. Mary's force overtime against UA Fort Smith en route to winning last year's Heartland Conference Tournament championship.

The Rattlers return to San Antonio for their home opener against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in Bill Greehey Arena. The game also marks "Operation: Drive to the Basket," where the St. Mary's Men's Basketball and Rattler Athletics will honor StMU ROTC troops deployed overseas. Fans are encouraged to bring a non-perishable care package item for free admission into the game.
