Rattlers dig deep for home-opening victory over TAMUK

By Joe Rodriguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's Rattlers claimed a victory in their home opener over the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas, 63-54, on Wednesday night.

Senior Kriston Minor led all players in scoring with 19 points, while junior Isiah Parros chipped in 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists. The victory improved St. Mary's to 2-1 on the young year as Rattler Basketball paid tribute to military veterans with its annual Operation Drive to the Basket initiative. The fundraiser saw the Rattlers team with St. Mary's ROTC, St. Mary's Student Veterans Organization and St. Mary's Student Government Association to raise cash and nonperishable care package items to send to StMU ROTC alumni deployed overseas.

On the court, St. Mary's had to overcome a poor shooting game as they started 1 for 16 from beyond the 3-point arc in the first half and 28 percent overall. The poor shooting led to a 26-21 deficit at the half.

In the second half, the Rattlers were compelled by a big second-half run that was sparked by Minor, who started the second half 3 for 3 from the 3-point line. St. Mary's as a team ended up shooting 53 percent in the second half as it outscored the Javelinas by 14. The Rattlers also made a noticeable defensive adjustment by applying full-court pressure against the Javelinas, which forced several turnovers.

The cold start for both teams could be attributed to a shot clock malfunction, which delayed the game for 47 minutes. One of the clocks would not turn on after a dunk in the pregame warmups.

The home debut was the first opportunity that the Rattler faithful had to see the new talent that St. Mary's gained during the offseason. The new faces did not disappoint as true freshman Yanni Wetzell finished with 14 point on an efficient 4-for-7 shooting from the field, a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw stripe, and six rebounds. Junior Trey Hall also finished with nine points and seven rebounds as he played a turnover-free game. The Rattler fans also got to see the type of grit that this Rattler team plays with as Parros and Hall showed a great deal of emotion in the victory, which sparked the Rattlers in the second half. Wetzell was the man for the Rattlers down the stretch as he scored two clutch baskets during the Rattlers' last three possessions after Minor had fouled out of the game.

For the Javelinas, DJ Weather had a standout performance finishing with 16 points and seven rebounds. Troy Jones also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards.

The victory proves to be a good omen for the Rattlers as the Javelinas had managed to knock off two Heartland Conference foes, Texas-Permian Basin and Texas A&M International, to start the year. The Rattlers were projected to be the second-best team in the Heartland Conference according to the league's preseason poll.

These two teams are set to rematch on December 14 in Kingsville, Texas, but for now the Rattlers will enjoy more than a week-long break as their next game will not be until they face Missouri S&T on November 27 on their home court. The game is part of the annual St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic. The tournament will be broadcast free of charge on the Rattler Network at RattlerAthletics.com.
