Newman rides hot start to dethrone @StMUvolleyball on Senior Day

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Volleyball closed out the season with a home loss to Newman on Saturday, falling 3-0 on Senior Day at Bill Greehey Arena.

The Jets (25-8, 13-3 in Heartland Conference) never cooled following a hot start in the first set, prevailing 25-13, 25-15, 25-18.

Prior to the career, St. Mary's celebrated the careers of seniors Jenna Paul, Lauren Holman, Tori Estrada and Kalyn Guthrie, along with former Rattler Mikayla Bass, who would have been a senior for the team this year if not for a rare illness that cut her career short.

St. Mary's (7-21, 4-12) hoped to ride the momentum of the emotional ceremony, and for a while it looked to be headed in that direction. Paul had an early kill that tied the first set at 2-2, but the Jets then reeled off nine straight points to grab an 11-2 lead it would never relinquish.

Behind Ashley Gonzalez's match-high 18 kills, Newman outhit St. Mary's .362-.186. Holman led the Rattler attack in her final match, recording a team-high eight kills along with a .500 attack percentage. Tarine Grace also had eight kills and hit .500 on the day.

Estrada, also playing her final match, led the squad with 12 digs, while junior Rachael Scicchitano paced the Rattlers with 11 assists. Guthrie added 10 assists in her final performance, while Paul registered seven kills in her final showing.
