Rattlers go down to the wire in loss to No. 10 Colorado Mines

GOLDEN, Colo. — St. Mary's Men's Basketball fell to No. 10 Colorado School of Mines Friday night, 70-62, after a tightly contested match.

An Isaiah Parros dunk cut a one-time 11-point deficit to one, 61-60, with 1:34 remaining. But St. Mary's could not get over the hump, missing several late 3-pointers as Mines made its free throws to seal the victory.

Leading the way for the Rattlers offensively were freshman Yanni Wetzell and junior Trey Hall, who contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively.

The competition saw an even amount of boards between the two squads, with the Orediggers only outrebounding the Rattlers 32 to 28. Kriston Minor chipped in a strong eight rebounds, while Ed Seay pulled down five.

The first half started out slowly with the score remaining within five points for the majority of the time. The Rattlers struggled to get a spark going offensively, shooting just 11 of 25 from the field and 2 of 7 from beyond the arc in the opening frame.

The Rattlers also got into foul trouble early, committing five fouls within the first few minutes, and sending Mines to the line, where they would capitalize, shooting 65 percent from the foul stripe.

Both teams remained neck-and-neck for the remainder of the first half, going to halftime with Mines leading 28-27.

Coming into the second frame, the Orediggers jumped out early, extending their lead to as much as 11 during the half before the Rattlers began making a run of their own.

With about four minutes left to play in the game, the Rattlers started chipping away at an 11-point lead. Forced turnovers and fast breaks shifted the momentum in the Rattlers' favor as they outscored the Orediggers 12-2 in a three-minute span.

Despite their hard-pressed defense and smart offensive plays, fouls late in the second half halted the Rattlers' comeback, sending Mines to the line 14 times in the last two minutes of play.

Mines went 9 of 14 at the foul line to seal their 70-62 victory over the Rattlers.

The Rattlers will go into their final game of the Heartland-RMAC Shootout against Regis University at 6 p.m. (CT) Saturday evening in Golden, Colorado.
