SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's could not hold onto a second-half lead Sunday, surrendering two goals in a 2-1 defeat to Midwestern State in nonconference play.

Scoring off consecutive corner kicks less than 10 minutes apart, Midwestern State (8-4-3) used goals from Morgan Hannon and Callie Briseno to surge past the Rattlers (10-4) late in the regular-season home finale at Sigma Beta Chi Field.

The goals undid a go-ahead goal from St. Mary's Lauren Peck in the 50th minute, as Peck took a pass from Brittney Lacek to connect for her fifth goal of the season.

Midwestern State outshot St. Mary's 17-10, including a 9-6 advantage on goal.

Caitlin McCarrell dropped to 2-1 in the net on the season after taking over the goal at the break. She had five saves in 45 minutes. Starter Alyssa Taramona saved two shots in 45 scoreless minutes in the first half.

Peck led St. Mary's offensive attack with five shots, including three on goal.

St. Mary's will hit the road for a pair of games next week against Dallas Baptist and St. Edward's that will determine the Heartland Conference champion. The Rattlers play DBU in Dallas at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Patriot Soccer Field.
