Women's Soccer wins 5th straight in shutout of Newman

SAN ANTONIO — It's going to be a race to the finish in the Heartland Conference.

St. Mary's Women's Soccer blanked visiting Newman 3-0 on Thursday, creating a logjam atop the league standings with two conference games left on the slate.

The Rattlers (10-3, 5-1) are tied with Lubbock Christian atop the standings at 5-1, followed closely by Dallas Baptist (4-0-1) and St. Edward's (4-1). St. Mary's closes out the regular season against Dallas Baptist and St. Edward's next week.

Setting up all the chaos was a near perfect victory over the Jets, as the Rattlers used an 18-1 shot advantage to silence Newman from the early goings.

Kristal Williams connected for St. Mary's first goal — and her seventh of the season — when she drew out the goalkeeper and pushed a shot past her for a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute. Nearly 10 minutes later, Natalie Rodriguez scored her first goal of the year on a corner kick that dribbled into the back of the net to take a 2-0 lead into the half.

Later, with just over five minutes remaining in the match, Heather Dawson scored to ice the game with a 3-0 advantage.

Alyssa Taramona and Caitlin McCarrell split time in the net, combining to orchestrate the Rattlers' seventh shutout of the season.

St. Mary's will return to action Sunday, when it hosts Midwestern State at 11 a.m. in the regular-season home finale at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
