Red-hot Men's Soccer shuts out Newman for pivotal win

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Men's Soccer continued its ascent up the Heartland Conference standings Thursday night.

Aided by an early red card against Newman, the Rattlers dominated play against the Jets, cruising to a 2-0 victory before 123 fans in the home finale at Sigma Beta Chi Field.

Winners of two straight, St. Mary's (7-7, 3-3 Heartland Conference) outshot Newman (8-6-1, 3-2) 18-11 to move into fifth place in the Heartland standings, and fourth among schools eligible for the postseason tournament.

Pato Botello got things going with a first-half goal, connecting in the 22nd minute after faking out a defender at the top of the box and beating the goalie one-on-one. Later, in the 70th minute, Victor Luna iced the game after taking it along the end line and burying a goal in the far corner. Luna, assisted by Ignacio Fernandez, netted his fifth goal of the season. Botello's goal marked his second of the year.

Jack Moore compiled his first clean sheet of the season, saving one shot in 90 minutes in the net.

St. Mary's will travel to Portales, N.M., where it will take on Eastern New Mexico at 1 p.m. Sunday in a nonconference tilt.
