There can only be “Juan”: Sanchez’s golden goal in OT completes Rattler comeback

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — It took all of 31 seconds in overtime for Juan Sanchez and the St. Mary's Rattlers to walk-off with a 2-1 victory over Oklahoma Christian Saturday afternoon at Sigma Beta Chi Field.

Sanchez (Jr., San Angelo, TX) deposited the golden goal in overtime after tracking the loose ball in front of the net amidst a scramble. The goal was Sanchez's second of the season and it could not have come at a better time. With only three conference matches left in the season, it was a must-win for a Rattler team who had been dealt three consecutive losses that were decided by one goal.

"It feels great," Sanchez said. "Today, it went our way."

On a day where the Rattlers honored their senior class, it was fitting that seniors, Ignacio Fernandez (Sr., Cordoba, Argentina) and Victor Luna (Sr., Sealy, Texas) connected for an equalizing goal, sparking the comeback in the 53rd minute.

The play unfolded when Wren May (Jr., Brisbane, Australia) found Fernandez who led Luna with a pass that, at first, seemed too far in front. Then from a near impossible angle, Luna found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

Following the match, Sanchez credited the nine seniors for the impact they had on the team.

"I want to thank them all for pushing us everyday at practice," he said.

Despite allowing an early goal, Jack Moore (Jr., Lewisham, London) kept the Rattlers in the match, recording a match-high six saves. Along with Moore, defenders Garrett Larrington (Sr., Houston, Texas) and Jack Verth (Jr., Edinburgh, Scotland) kept the Eagles at bay, conceding only 10 shots to the Rattlers' 24.

The Rattlers are still in the hunt for the postseason, but being one game under .500, they know it won't be easy.

"Coach says adversity brings champions," Sanchez said. "We got to keep working."

St. Mary's now sets its sights on Newman for the final home match of the season on Oct. 22.
