Rattlers undone by shooting woes against UAFS

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

FORT SMITH, Ark. — Morgan Pullins' monster night was not enough for St. Mary's, which dropped a Heartland Conference battle with Arkansas-Fort Smith, 64-56, on Thursday night.

Pullins had 24 points and a school-record-tying 20 rebounds — her second 20-rebound outing in the last three games — while Dezirae Elias added 16 points and five assists for the Rattlers (9-4, 3-2) in defeat.

St. Mary's held UA Fort Smith (5-6, 3-1) to just 18 field goals in 67 attempts (26.9 percent), but couldn't overcome its own poor shooting performance at the Stubblefield Center. The Rattlers shot 42.9-percent from the floor, missed all five 3-pointers and shot less than 50 percent — 8 of 19 — from the charity stripe.

UAFS, meanwhile, connected on seven 3-pointers — representing more than a third of their total makes — and scored 21 points from the free-throw line.

After seeing the Lions take a 23-22 lead into halftime, the Rattlers battled back to take multiple leads in the second half, including a 36-35 advantage with 13:13 remaining.

But UAFS retook control late in the half, using an 11-4 surge to take a nine-point lead, 53-44, with 4:10 remaining. St. Mary's would get no closer than four the rest of the way.

For Pullins, the star senior forward hauled in her 800th career rebound on the night, leaving her 95 away from tying Erin Griffin's school-record mark of 895. Pullins' 20 rebounds ties her own mark, set this season against Oklahoma Christian on New Year's Day, and that of Kiara Etheridge, set last season.

The Rattlers will try to get back into the win column on Saturday, when they take on Rogers State. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Claremore, Okla.
