Last second shot misses as StMU suffers heartbreaker against RSU

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

CLAREMORE, Okla. — As the Hillcats stepped up to the line with one second remaining and a three-point lead, the Rattlers' fiercely competitive point guard Dezirae Elias dropped her head in disappointment and frustration.

This one got away.

Looking to bounce back after a tough loss earlier this week, St. Mary's Women's Basketball logged another heartbreaker in a loss to Rogers State Saturday, 71-66, after a missed three-pointer that would have tied it hit the iron in the final seconds for the Rattlers' second straight defeat.

Nineteen tied scores and lead changes later, the Heartland Conference matchup came down to the final seconds as the Rattlers trailed by three with eight ticks on the clock at the inbound after leading by one with 35 seconds left. A corner three saw Elias (Jr., Chandler, Ariz.) nearly force overtime but her shot was just off target to drop the Rattlers to 9-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

The heartbreak wasn't without some stellar play and impressive stats from the Rattlers however as three starters broke double-digits with the remaining starters close behind.

Morgan Pullins (Sr., Franklin., Mich.), who currently leads the league in rebounding and scoring, put on her usual show with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Elias, who provided big energy in the second half, added 12 points along with four assists and four steals as the nation's No. 2 leader in steals.

Kiara Etheridge (So., San Antonio) chipped in 10 points followed by freshman Kealani Marquez (San Antonio) who set a new career-high with nine points along with five assists.

Kyra Littlejohn (Sr., Southfield, Mich.) banked in eight points and was the Rattlers' main distributor with an impressive eight assists.

But the game's most haunting stat was the Hillcats' dominance at the charity stripe.

RSU went a jarring 96.3 percent at the line after missing just one free throw for the game, going 26-27.

The Hillcats' 26 points off free throws offset their 32.7 percentage from the floor and enabled them to hedge the Rattlers who held an eight-point lead in the first half.

By the break, RSU (4-9, 2-3 in Heartland Conference) had chipped away at the Rattlers' eight-point lead, the largest lead for either team for the game, to lead by one, 32-31, after going 12-12 at the line.

The lead swapped throughout the second half and in the final minutes but it was the Hillcats who gained the final advantage for the win.

The Rattlers return home to play Texas-Permian Basin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday inside Bill Greehey Arena.
