Lions surge past Rattlers behind strong second half

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

FORT SMITH, Ark. — Arkansas-Fort Smith overcame St. Mary's hot start to deal the Rattlers a 74-60 defeat Thursday night.

StMU led by six in the early goings at the Stubblefield Center, but a Davaunta Thomas dunk with 7:22 remaining in the first half gave the Lions their first lead at 16-15 — an advantage they would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Bryce Smith and Marvin Binney led the Rattlers (6-6, 3-2) with 12 points apiece, while Marvin Whitt also hit double figures with 11 points.

St. Mary's shot 37.5 percent from the floor (21-56) compared to the Lions' 63-percent (29 of 46) clip.

Thomas' dunk helped jumpstart a run that saw UAFS (6-7, 2-3) take a 29-20 lead into the break, which the Lions extended to 38-22 following a 9-2 run to start the half.

The Lions led by as many as 17 in the game, but not before the Rattlers put a scare in them late. JJ Bolton and Marvin Whitt combined to make three free throws with a little less than six minutes remaining to put the Rattlers within nine, 59-50, for their smallest deficit since the opening minute of the half.  Whitt again sliced it to nine on a layup following a miss from 3-point range with 4:44 left.

But the Rattlers went three consecutive possessions without any points, allowing the Lions to stretch the lead back to 13.

St. Mary's returns to the court Saturday to take on Rogers State at 3 p.m. in Claremore, Okla.
