Rattlers go the distance in double overtime victory over RSU

CLAREMORE, Okla. — St. Mary's Men's Basketball put on the after-burners in Saturday's matchup against Rogers State, pulling out a double overtime victory, 85-75, that saw big comebacks in the Rattlers' highest scoring game on the season.

With .4 seconds remaining in regulation, the Rattlers were clinging to a three-point lead, 66-63, after surging back from a shaky first half that saw a 10-point Rattler deficit. The Hillcats pulled up for a game tying three-pointer but instead were granted three free buckets at the line, which would all be sunk by Hillcat JC Hartzler to force overtime, after an untimely Rattler foul.

Kriston Minor (Jr., Huntsville, Texas) seemed to put the game away in the first overtime with a three-pointer with 58 seconds remaining to put the Rattlers up by four, but another undesirable foul put Hartzler back at the line to bring it within two, 74-72, with 43 seconds ticks left. The Hillcats then snaked the Rattlers on a transition fast break layup to tie it, 74-74, with five seconds left on the clock to send the Heartland Conference matchup into a second overtime.

This time, the Rattlers put it away, going on a demanding 11-1 run in double overtime with Marvin Binney (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) and Ryan Thomas (Sr., Riverton, Utah) each scoring four points while Marvin Whitt (Sr., Birmingham, Ala.) added three to close the 50-minute contest, 85-75.

Four Rattlers scored in double-digits in the extended victory with Bryce Smith (RS-Jr., Corpus Christi, Texas), Binney and Whitt all scoring 16 points apiece while Minor chipped in 14. Justin Alexander (Sr., San Antonio) added nine points with a team-high seven rebounds.

Smith, who set a career-high 16 points Saturday after breaking his career-high of 12 set against UA Fort Smith earlier this week, provided a huge spark in the first half that helped the Rattlers close an eight-point gap after scoring the final six Rattler points in the first frame to bring StMU within three, 39-36, at the break.

Smith scored 14 of the Rattlers' 21 bench points in the first half on 5-6 shooting that included sinking two threes while Minor hit three 3's on five attempts for the game to keep his three-point percentage at an impressive .500 on the season.

The victory improved the Rattlers to 7-6 on the season and 4-2 in conference play while the Hillcats dropped to 8-6 and 2-4 in league play.

The Rattlers are back in action at home to take on Texas-Permian Basin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday inside Bill Greehey Arena.
