Rattlers' offense halted in loss to Newman

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

WICHITA, Kan. — The St. Mary's Rattlers could not shake off a slow first half in their 61-45 loss to the Newman Jets on Saturday.

StMU shot less than 23 percent from the field in the first half, making only five of its first 22 attempts in the upset loss.

The Rattlers trimmed the deficit to seven points midway through the second half, when a Morgan Pullins free throw cut it to 39-32 with 10:46 remaining. But that would be as close as they would get, as Newman went on to finish the game outscoring the Rattlers 22-13 over the final 10 minutes of the game.

St. Mary's was led by Kiara Etheridge (So., San Antonio), who notched a double-double, 12 points and 15 rebounds. Pullins (Sr., Frankilin, Mich.) led all Rattlers with 15 points, while Dezirae Elias (Jr., Chandler, Ariz.) contributed 11 points and two assists.

St. Mary's fell to 12-7 and 6-5 in Heartland Conference play, dropping the Rattlers to fourth place entering the stretch run. Newman improved to 7-12 and 4-7 in league play.

The Rattlers will look to bounce back from a rough two-game road trip when they return home Thursday against Rogers State. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside Bill Greehey Arena.
