Last-second shot doesn't fall as Rattlers' four-game streak ends

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

WICHITA, Kan. — All good things must come to an end. This was the case as the Rattler men's basketball team suffered a close defeat, 86-84, to conference rival Newman, ending a four-game conference winning streak.

St. Mary's made a valiant effort to add another win to their impressive run, trimming an eight-point deficit with 1:04 remaining to have a shot to win at the buzzer. But Bryce Smith's last-second jumper was no good as Newman prevailed.

The Rattlers were headed by Marvin Binney (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) with a team-high 17 points and six assists, and a strong second half from JJ Bolton (Sr., Beaumont, Miss.), who added 15 points to go along with his seven rebounds.

Three other Rattlers, Marvin Whitt (Sr., Birmingham, Ala.), Kriston Minor (Jr., Huntsville, Texas) and Isaiah Matthews (R-Sr., Texas City, Texas) were also in double figures, scoring 14, 12 and 12 points, respectively.

It was a tight affair all the way through, with neither team leading by more than nine points the entire game.

St Mary's seemed to be poised to force the issue early leading halfway through the first half, but saw its lead ultimately be overtaken by the Jets. This was due in part to Newman's efficiency from behind the arc, where the Jets shot 53 percent, and also due to standout performance from guard Reggie Baker.

Baker, who ended his stellar night with 34 points — 15 of those from three-point range — gave the Rattlers' defense problems throughout the entire contest. After Baker scored to level the score at 43 apiece, Jeremy Espinoza added a three to his total of 22 points, and the Jets led for the remainder of the affair.

The Rattlers brought the game within two points with six seconds remaining, enough time for Bryce Smith to have a look to change the Rattlers' fortunes, but the attempt was no good. St. Mary's saw its record fall to 11-8 and 8-4 in Heartland Conference play. With the victory, Newman improved to 10-8 overall and 6-6 in conference play.

Coach Jim Zeleznak's team will look to rebound from the loss when it takes on Rogers State on Thursday inside Bill Greehey Arena at 7:30 p.m.
