Pullins puts on show in Rattler rout of Newman

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — With St. Mary's Hall of Famer Erin Griffin in attendance Saturday, she and a handful of other Rattler Women's Basketball alumni sat inside Bill Greehey Arena watching potential history in the making.

As Morgan Pullins poured in 26 points with seven rebounds and three blocks in a 72-54 rout of Newman, the star senior forward inched ever closer to numerous Rattler records — most of which are held by Griffin herself.

Pullins soared past former teammate Jackie Woods for fifth place on the school's all-time scoring list, becoming just the fifth Rattler to surpass 1,300 career points with 1,307. And with 14 regular-season games left on the docket, it's possible that Pullins, who is averaging nearly 22 points per game this season, could make a run at Griffin's school record of 1,642 career points.

Pullins also ranks No. 3 in school history with 780 career rebounds (Griffin is the record holder with 895), and is one block from tying Teri Mollett for the No. 2 slot on the all-time blocks list. Pullins has 122 for her career, with Paola Vasquez the all-time leader with 196.

But for as dominant as Pullins continues to be, Saturday's victory was about the hustle, grit and determination the Rattlers (9-3, 3-1 in Heartland Conference) continue to show as a team.

After seeing Newman (3-9, 0-4) scratch and claw to trail just 31-28 at the half, the Rattlers poured it on in the second, opening the half on a 13-2 run to take a commanding 44-30 lead.

The sequence included steals and cross-court passes from Dezirae Elias that resulted in breakaway layups; hustle from Kyra Littlejohn that led to offensive rebounds and and-one opportunities; and pin-point passing from Kiara Etheridge in the paint.

The Rattlers would go on to lead by as much as 20 in the game, helping the Rattlers remain one loss behind three unbeatens in the Heartland Conference.

Elias had 17 points, four assists and three steals against Newman, while Etheridge also hit double digits with 12 points to go along with seven boards. Littlejohn added nine points on 3-of-4 shooting. Emily Troell led the way in rebounding with eight boards.

St. Mary's shot 48.3 percent from the floor in the game while limiting Newman to 33.3-percent shooting.

The Rattlers will hit the road to take on UA Fort Smith in a Heartland battle beginning at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Fort Smith, Ark.
