Whitt, Minor lead StMU past Jets to regain winning record

SAN ANTONIO — The Rattlers had a statement performance Saturday afternoon against the Newman Jets taking down the Heartland Conference contender 78-65 in their second straight blowout.
 
The win bumped the Rattlers to winning record at 6-5 overall and improved them to 3-1 in league play.
 
Three Rattlers scored in double-digits in the win including Marvin Whitt (Sr., Birmingham, Ala.) who led the Rattlers with 24 points followed by Kriston Minor (Jr., Huntsville, Texas) and Justin Alexander (Sr., San Antonio) with 18 and 16 points, respectively.
 
St. Mary's Men's Basketball dominated the boards, outrebounding the Jets 31-23. JJ Bolton (Sr., Beaumont, Miss.), the Rattlers' leading rebounder on the season, pulled down a team-high eight boards. Marvin Binney (Sr., Ontario) and Minor chipped in six boards apiece.
 
Bolton also led the Rattlers with seven assists while Whitt added five in a game of precise ball rotation as the Snakes assisted 20 of their 29 field goals.
 
During the first half, the Jets jumped out to an 8-2 lead before the Rattlers answered with a 10-point run consisting of jumpers from Whitt and Alexander and back-to-back three-point shots from Minor, who would go on to go 4-5 from beyond the arc.
 
Late in the first half, the Jets (5-5, 1-3 in Heartland Conference) fought their way back, going on a seven-point run to bring the game within three. The Rattlers pulled away once again, leading by eight, 39-31, going into halftime.
 
The Rattlers held onto the lead for the rest of the game, leading by as much as 15 to seal the victory.
 
The second half mirrored the first with the Rattlers' offense going on a run to lead by eleven before the Jets rallied back again to bring the score to 57-55, the closest margin they would see for the rest of the game.
 
With 7:46 remaining in the game, the Jets hit their final field goal to put the score at 57-52. The Jets scored their final thirteen points from the foul line, shooting an impressive 95 percent.
 
The Rattlers continued to push during the remainder of the second, leading by fifteen to end the game with a 78-65 victory.
 
Hoping to continue their win streak, the squad will travel to Fort Smith, Ark. to take on the Lions of UA Fort Smith on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
