Last second layup dooms Rattlers on the road in loss to OC

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

OKLAHOMA CITY — St. Mary's Women's Basketball couldn't find its footing on the road, suffering a heartbreaking loss to Oklahoma Christian Thursday night, 55-54, despite a big second half from senior Morgan Pullins.

The Heartland Conference matchup came down to the final possession in the tightly contested game, with Eagle Sydney Hill scoring the winning bucket off a layup with just two seconds remaining the game.

The rough loss dropped the Rattlers to 12-6 on the season and 6-4 in Heartland Conference play.

The battle was a barnburner throughout with the largest lead of the game being held by the Rattlers at just five. The Rattlers were unable to overcome turnovers in the loss, overshadowing some superior stats from StMU.

Pullins (Franklin, Mich.) led the night with a game-high 21 points and 15 rebounds for her sixth straight double-double. The senior also recorded a team-high five steals and two blocks.

Kiara Etheridge (So., San Antonio) followed with 11 points and seven rebounds and Dezirae Elias (Jr., Chandler, Ariz.) chipped in nine points with a team-high six assists.

The Rattlers went into the break down one, 20-19, with that lone point coming back to haunt them as both squads scored 35 in the second half.

For StMU, Pullins scored 17 of the team's 35 points in the second half and led the Rattlers in outrebounding the Eagles at an impressive 42 to 26.

The Rattlers also outshot the Eagles (7-11, 4-6 in Heartland Conference) from the floor at 45.7 percent to 30.8 percent but the Snakes were just unable to close it out for the stinging loss.

StMU will have another shot to fix its road woes, facing Newman at 1 p.m. Saturday in Wichita, Kan.
