Rattlers blow past DBU for third straight 20-point rout

By Kaeleen Zeleznak | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Men's Basketball notched its third straight blowout victory in Heartland Conference play Saturday afternoon, cruising past the Dallas Baptist Patriots, 77-57, at Bill Greehey Arena.

Marvin Binney (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) and Bryce Smith (R-Jr., Corpus Christi) led the way offensively for the Rattlers, scoring 13 points apiece. JJ Bolton (Sr., Beaumont, Miss.) and Isaiah Matthews (R-Sr., Texas City, Texas) also had big nights, chipping in 11 points each as the Rattlers (10-7, 7-3) notched their third consecutive victory of at least 20 points.

The Rattlers dominated the boards, outrebounding the Patriots (10-7, 4-5) 44-23. Matthews pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, followed by Marvin Whitt (Sr., Birminham, Ala.) with eight boards.

The first half was a highly contested battle that saw the lead change eight times and the score tied twice. With two minutes remaining in the half, the Rattlers went on a six-point run sparked by a shot from beyond the arc from Whitt. The Rattlers went to halftime leading the Patriots, 38-32.

Coming back from the break, the Rattlers came out strong and never looked back.  They extended their lead to as much as 23 halfway through the frame, aided in large part by a 19-6 run to start the half that put the Rattlers up 57-38 with 12:54 left. The Patriots had a hard time connecting on offense, shooting 31.9 percent from the field to the Rattlers' 49 percent.

With the victory, the Rattlers are in a three-way tie for second place behind league-leading St. Edward's.

The Rattlers look to continue their hot streak on the road as they travel to Oklahoma City to take on Oklahoma Christian at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
