Rattlers rout TAMIU on #BattleforBear night

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — On a night where the emphasis was geared toward charity, the Rattlers gave the Dustdevils of Texas A&M International anything but a chance, seizing a third straight conference win, 68-42, Thursday inside Bill Greehey Arena.

St. Mary's was led by a big night by Dezirae Elias (Jr., Chandler, Ariz.), chipping in 18 points, six assists and adding an impressive nine rebounds.

Kiara Etheridge (So., San Antonio) also played a part in the victory, grabbing 16 boards to go along with her 15 points. Her fellow forward counterpart and reigning National Player of the Week, Morgan Pullins (Sr., Franklin, Mich.), met her average double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The Rattlers jumped out to a quick lead, scoring the game's first eight points.

They pushed the tempo for the duration of the half, taking a 30-16 lead into the intermission, and after establishing a double-digit lead they never looked back, sustaining their double-digit advantage throughout the second half of play.

Despite a 22-point performance from Jessica Prieto, accounting for more than half of TAMIU total tally, the Dustdevils could not seem to stifle the Lady Rattlers' offense and watched as Elias and company cruised to the a comfortable victory.

To add to the victory, #BattleforBear night proved to be a success with fans donating money for former Rattler volleyball player Mikayla Bass in an effort to raise funds to pay for her forthcoming operation after being diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis. The evening raised nearly $700 for Bass, who hopes to return to the court for the Rattlers after fighting her disease. For more information on Bass' battle, visit www.BattleforBear.com.

St. Mary's third straight conference victory brings its record to 12-5 on the year and 6-3 in Heartland Conference play.

The Rattlers will now travel to Oklahoma Christian and Newman before returning back to Bill Greehey Arena on Feb. 5 to take on Rogers State at 5:30 p.m.
