Hilltoppers trampled in Battle of the Saints matchup, 63-44

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Women's Basketball managed to fend off an uncharacteristic slow start to earn a convincing win, 63-44, over rival St. Edward's in the Operation Drive to the Basket game Saturday afternoon, downing another top-tier team in the Heartland Conference.

The Rattlers were led by two dominant double-double performances from senior Morgan Pullins (Franklin, Mich.) and sophomore Kiara Etheridge (San Antonio). Pullins knocked down 20 points and 15 rebounds and Etheridge chipped in 19 and 11 boards.

Guards Kyra Littlejohn (Sr., Southfield, Mich.) and Dezirae Elias (Jr., Chandler, Ariz.) also played their part in the big victory, contributing nine points and five assists, respectively.
These performances proved to be vital, especially with the Rattlers not scoring their first basket until 16:27 showed on the clock to start the game.

But shortly after, the Rattlers were able to take the lead into halftime, 28-24, and never looked back.

A quick three-pointer by Elias and a basket and foul by Pullins seconds into the second half sustained the momentum and stifled the Hilltoppers, the league's No. 2 team.

Despite 16 points from Mileka Loydrake, St. Edwards (11-4, 5-2 In Heartland Conference) had no answers for the Rattlers and watched as Elias weaved her way past three Hilltopper defenders before assisting Pullins for yet another basket and foul early in the final frame. This sparked the Rattlers to negate any chance of a comeback.

Coach Jason Martens' team now stands at 11-5 on the year and 5-3 in Heartland Conference play, boasting a pristine 7-0 home record.

The Rattlers will return to Bill Greehey Arena Jan. 22 when they take on conference opponent Texas A&M International at 5:30 p.m.
