Rattlers bully Hilltoppers in 29-point drubbing

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Billed as a heavyweight tilt between Heartland Conference title contenders, this "Battle of the Saints" was decidedly won in the early rounds.

St. Mary's Men's Basketball bullied No. 23-ranked St. Edward's 86-57 for its 13th straight victory over its archrival, picking up a pivotal Heartland Conference victory that leaves the Rattlers a game out of first place.

Kriston Minor scored a career-high 27 points, Marvin Binney scored 16 and Marvin Whitt turned in an all-around effort with 10 points, five rebounds and five assists as the Rattlers never trailed before 620 fans in the Operation Drive to the Basket game at Bill Greehey Arena.

St. Mary's (8-7, 5-3) went on a 38-9 run during the meat of the first half, taking a 30-point lead with 3:05 remaining before halftime to effectively put the game out of reach. St. Edward's (14-2, 6-2) trailed by as many as 32 points and never got within 24 in the second half after trailing 50-23 at the break.

The Hilltoppers couldn't get going offensively, shooting 38.3 percent from the floor after hitting six shots from the floor in the first half. Eighteen of St. Edward's 57 points came at the line, where the Hilltoppers also struggled with 15 misses. The Rattlers, on the other hand, could barely miss, shooting 54.7 percent for the game. They topped the 50-percent clip in each half.

Eleven Rattlers scored in the game, which saw St. Mary's raise about $700 in its Operation Drive to the Basket initiative. The money will be donated to the St. Mary's ROTC to purchase goods to send to StMU troops deployed overseas. St. Mary's also collected non-perishable items at the door of its men's and women's doubleheader against St. Edward's.

With the victory, the Rattlers sit in fourth place in the Heartland Conference standings, but trail St. Edward's and Texas-Permian Basin by a single game. Lubbock Christian, which is not eligible for the postseason tournament, leads St. Mary's by a half game for third place.

The Rattlers will wrap up their four-game homestand with a pair of games next week, starting with Thursday's battle against Texas A&M International. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
