UTPB able to stave off Rattlers in final seconds

SAN ANTONIO — The first of a four-game homestead didn't go as planned for St. Mary's Men's Basketball as they came up short against Heartland Conference foe Texas-Permian Basin, 65-64, inside Bill Greehey Arena.

With 30 seconds left and the game tied at 64 following a free throw by Isaiah Matthews (R-Sr., Texas City, Texas), the Rattlers needed one stop to send the game to overtime.

Instead, following a high pick-and-roll on the right side of the floor, the Falcons' Xavier Martin was able to draw a foul with 3.8 seconds left. After Martin made one of two free throws, the Rattlers were unable to get a shot off before time expired.

Matthews led all scorers with 19 points to go along with seven rebounds. Marvin Binney (Sr., Toronto, Canada) was the only other Rattler in double figures with 10 points with Marvin Whitt (Sr., Birmingham, Ala.) close behind with nine points.

St. Mary's falls to 7-7 on the year and 4-3 in the Heartland Conference while the Falcons improved to 10-5 overall and 5-2 in conference as the league's No. 2 team.

The Rattlers will look to bounce back at home on Saturday against St. Edwards, with tipoff set for 3 p.m. inside Bill Greehey Arena.
