Volleyball enjoys wire-to-wire win vs. UTPB

The Rattlers never trailed in Saturday's 3-0 victory over UTPB.
Box Score

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Volleyball picked up its first victory of the season in emphatic fashion Saturday.

The Rattlers swept Heartland Conference foe Texas-Permian Basin 3-0, cruising 25-19, 25-15, 25-16 before 200 fans at Bill Greehey Arena. St. Mary's never trailed in the match.

Fresh off of her 22-kill performance the night before, senior outside hitter Kelsey Huber led the way again with 12 kills, while fellow senior Devan Hartung hit .615 with eight kills on 13 total attacks.

Libero Victorria Martinez collected 21 digs in the match, moving just 61 away from equaling Katy Migl's school record for career digs (1,927).

With the victory, St. Mary's improved to 1-1 in Heartland Conference play and 1-2 overall, while Texas-Permian Basin dropped to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in Heartland action.

StMU wasted little time to pounce on UTPB, claiming a 4-0 lead in the first set. The Falcons battled back to even the score at 6-6, but the Rattlers reeled off five straight points during a stretch that helped them claim a 14-8 lead.

It was a similar theme in the second set, as the Rattlers broke away from a 3-3 tie with a 10-3 run.

Another hot streak, this time of four straight points, gave St. Mary's a 15-7 advantage in the third set — a lead they would not relinquish en route to clinching the match on a Huber kill.

St. Mary's will return to action Wednesday night, when it hosts Our Lady of the Lake at 6 p.m. on "Gold Rush" night. Fans are asked to wear yellow and can enjoy free drinks and food at a pre-match tailgate outside Bill Greehey Arena.
