Wolf's first-half header, Kilmer's stops the difference for StMU

SAN ANTONIO — Playing a man down for the final 15 minutes, St. Mary's Men's Soccer persevered Sunday, holding on to defeat Huston-Tillotson 1-0 at Sigma Beta Chi Field.

Jack Wolf's first-half header was the difference, as the junior reserve connected in the 29th minute on what proved to be the lone goal of the game. It was Wolf's third goal of the season.

Goalkeeper Mitchell Kilmer shined in the net for St. Mary's (3-3-2), registering eight saves to record his second shutout of the season. His day included a spectacular sequence in the second half where he punched away a pair of difficult shots to preserve the Rattlers' one-goal lead.

St. Mary's outshot the Rams (0-5) 17-13, but managed just two shots on goal — Wolf's all-important shot that connected and another shot from forward Victor Luna.

That meant defense defined the Rattlers' victory, particularly down the stretch after Josh Stevens drew a red card with nearly 15 minutes left.

Ignacio Fernandez and Aaron Dunks led St. Mary's with three shots apiece.

St. Mary's will now move on to Heartland Conference play, starting with an Oct. 4 showdown against Rogers State. The Rattlers will travel to the Hillcats' Soldier Field in Claremore, Okla., for Saturday's 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
