Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Rattlers log most lopsided win of season in rout of RSU

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

CLAREMORE, Okla. — A month to the day since kicking off a new season with a new direction under a new coach, there's plenty to like about where St. Mary's Men's Soccer has positioned itself.

The Rattlers opened up Heartland Conference play Saturday with a 5-1 victory over Rogers State, using two Jack Wolf goals and two Aaron Dunk assists — paired with stellar performances from numerous others — to log their most lopsided victory of the season.

Wolf scored his second goal with less than a minute remaining in the first half to open up a 3-1 halftime lead, which Ignacio Fernandez and Ryan Hoskins expanded with second-half goals. Victor Luna scored the other Rattler goal, his fourth of the season.

Mitchell Kilmer added three saves in the net for St. Mary's, which used an efficient shooting display in outshooting Rogers State (3-5, 0-1) 13-12. Seven of the Rattlers' 13 shots were on goal, with five finding the back of the net.

Now one of just four teams in the league with a winning record on the season, St. Mary's (4-3-2) is above .500 this far into a season for the first time since 2005.

The day also marked St. Mary's first-ever victory over Rogers State, having fallen 3-1 last season in the only previous meeting between the teams.

St. Mary's will try to improve to 2-0 in conference play Monday, when it takes on Newman in Wichita, Kan. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
