Martinez sets program career digs record, StMU goes 2-0

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Volleyball celebrated an historic moment in its 3-0 defeat of Texas A&M International Saturday at Bill Greehey Arena as libero Victorria Martinez set the program's new career digs record.
 
Martinez, a senior from Arlington, Texas, broke the record during the third set of Rattler Volleyball's Heartland Conference matchup against the Dustdevils, which the Rattlers went on to win 25-15 after claiming the first two sets 25-20 and 25-15.
 
Going into the match, Martinez was just 13 digs away from tying the career digs record previously held by volleyball legend Katy Migl at 1,927. Martinez tied the record late in the third set and became the new program career digs record holder shortly thereafter.

Martinez went on to record four more digs after setting the new record at 1,928 to bolster the record further, which was set at 1,932 with her 18 total digs in the win over TAMIU. As Martinez continues her final season with the Rattlers, she will continue to add to the new record with every dig.
 
Martinez's impressive, record-breaking play against TAMIU (0-8, 0-4 in conference) mirrored the Rattlers' dominance over the Dustdevils for the entire match, which saw StMU keep TAMIU to a low .009 hitting percentage for the match.
 
Lauren Holman (Jr., Rowlett, Texas) led the Rattlers with eight kills and totaled a team-high five block assists and two block solos. Holman hit .615 for the match in 13 attempts to place her No. 4 in the program's 10-14 attempts hitting percentage record.
 
Rachael Scicchitano (So., McKinney, Texas) led with a team-high 13 assists to help the Rattlers improve their record to 2-5 on the season and 2-2 in Heartland Conference play in the win over TAMIU.  
 
The Rattlers completed the St. Mary's Round Robin with a 3-1 victory over Southern Arkansas after their victory over TAMIU to end the day 2-0. Jenna Paul (Jr., Alvin, Texas) led the match with 11 kills while Martinez led with 25 digs and Scicchitano recording 29 assists. 

The Rattlers play Oklahoma Panhandle State at 3 p.m. Friday at Bill Greehey Arena.
