TAMUK staves off Rattler rally, wins in four

KINGSVILLE, Texas — A strong second set wasn't enough for St. Mary's Volleyball on Tuesday.
 
Texas A&M-Kingsville defeated the Rattlers 3-1 before 300 fans at the Steinke Center, staving off a Rattler rally that tied the match 1-1 to take consecutive sets en route to victory.
 
Melissa Heft led all players with 16 kills and hit .278 for the Rattlers (1-5), who were outhit in the match by the Javelinas (7-2) .343-.163.
 
Victorria Martinez led St. Mary's with 17 digs, moving 14 short of breaking Katy Migl's school-record of 1,927. Martinez will have a chance to set the new school record on Saturday, when the Rattlers will play a pair of matches against Texas A&M International and Southern Arkansas.
 
Looking to pull to .500 in conference play, St. Mary's (1-2 in Heartland) will face TAMIU in Heartland Conference competition at 11 a.m. at Bill Greehey Arena, before taking on Southern Arkansas at 3 p.m.
