Rival SEU charges back to take Rattler Volleyball in four sets

The Rattlers fell in four sets to rival St. Edward's on the Hilltoppers' home court.

AUSTIN, Texas — St. Mary's Volleyball shook rival St. Edward's in the first set of Saturday's Battle of Saints match in Austin, Texas but the Hilltoppers bounced back to take the battle in four sets to remain undefeated.
 
The Rattlers (1-4, 1-2 in conference) claimed the first set 25-21 but were unable to contest the Hilltoppers (5-0, 2-0 in conference) in the final three sets, falling 25-20, 25-14 and 25-15.
 
A .084 hitting percentage held the Rattlers back in the loss but the squad put up impressive numbers across the stat sheet that trumped the Hilltoppers including 12 block assists and two block solos.
 
Melissa Heft (Sr., San Antonio) and Victorria Martinez (Sr., Arlington, Texas) led both teams in kills and digs respectively, with Heft recording 13 kills and Martinez 31 digs in four sets.
 
Lauren Holman (Jr., Rowlett, Texas) tied a match-high four block assists while Heft and Devan Hartung (Sr., Hondo, Texas) picked up the match's only two solo blocks.
 
Setter Rachael Scicchitano (So., McKinney, Texas) also led the match with 22 assists.
 
The Rattlers will remain on the road to face Lone Star Conference contender Texas A&M-Kingsville at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Kingsville, Texas.
