Rattlers win fourth straight backed by Pullins, Elias

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Women's Basketball continued its winning ways Thursday night in Bill Greehey Arena with a comfortable 64-52 win over the Javelinas of Texas A&M-Kingsville, extending head coach Jason Martens' win streak to four games to take the Rattlers' overall record to 6-2 on the year.

The Rattlers were aided by yet another big performance by senior Morgan Pullins (Franklin, Mich.). The reigning two-time Heartland Conference Player of the Week led the team with 27 points and 15 rebounds with two blocks followed by Dezirae Elias (So., Chandler, Ariz.) with 19 points.

Kiara Etheridge (So., San Antonio) dominated the boards with a team-high seventeen boards and added nine points with two blocks. Pullins and Etheridge combined for over half of the Rattlers' 53 rebounds with 32.

Early on, neither team seemed likely to gain control of the game with seven lead changes between the two.  With 2:13 left in the half sophomore Kiara Etheridge made a layup to put the Rattlers ahead, 28-26, before Elias extended the lead by four with a nice drive and finish just before halftime to have the Rattlers in the lead, 30-26.

Despite a jumper by A&M-Kingsville's Micah Weaver to level the game at 32-32 in the beginning stages of the second, it was Pullins again with some good play down low to put the Rattlers ahead for good with the forward scoring 14 points in the second half alone.

After extending the lead to 14, the Javelinas (0-6) couldn't seem to find an answer for the Rattlers as they took complete control with impressive play from Elias, who ended her night with 19 points after scoring 14 in the second half, four assists and four steals.

Kealani Marquez (Fr., San Antonio) contributed to the team's cause as well, adding four steals.

The win is St. Mary's third consecutive at home. StMU will need to continue its run of good form in two weeks time when it travels to Oklahoma Panhandle State to kickoff Heartland Conference play. The Rattlers take on the Eagles at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18 in Goodwell, Okla.

The Rattlers will return home on the first day of the New Year when they face Oklahoma Christian at 1 p.m. inside Bill Greehey Arena.
