Rattlers open Heartland Conference play with blowout over OPSU

GOODWELL, Okla. — St. Mary's Men's Basketball bolstered its stats in the win over Oklahoma Panhandle State Thursday night to claim a blowout 84-67 victory in its Heartland Conference opener with four Rattlers scoring in double figures.
 
The victory marked the highest scoring game on the season and brought the Rattlers back up to .500 on the season with a 4-4 overall record and a 1-0 conference record.
 
Isaiah Matthews (RS-Sr., Texas City, Texas) led the lopsided game that had the Rattlers lead by as much as 25 points, scoring a season-high 14 points.
 
Fellow post Justin Alexander (Sr., San Antonio) followed with 13 points along with two assists and one block while Marvin Whitt (Sr., Birmingham, Ala.) chipped in 12 and tied the team-high in rebounds with four along with Joe Monroe (RS-Sr., San Antonio.)
 
JJ Bolton (Sr., Beaumont, Miss.) distributed the ball impressively well for the Rattlers recording six assists and adding 10 points with a team-high two steals. As a team, the Rattlers recorded 26 assists on 33 made shots.
 
Kameron Pearce (Sr., Boise, Idaho) and Bryce Smith (RS-Jr., Corpus Christi, Texas) put some good numbers off the bench, scoring eight points with five assists and seven points with four assists, respectively.
 
The Rattlers led the entire game with exception to the opening minutes of the blowout victory over the Aggies (2-7, 0-1 in conference), heading in the half with a 19-point lead, 51-32.
 
The Snakes were able to maintain their strong lead throughout the second half, gaining their largest lead of 25 with less than seven minutes left in the game to claim the victory.
 
The Rattlers remain on the road to face Lubbock Christian at 3 p.m. Saturday in Lubbock, Texas.
