Rattlers' comeback denied as buzzer-beater misses

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LUBBOCK, Texas — St. Mary's could not pull off a furious comeback Saturday against Lubbock Christian, as JJ Bolton missed from 3-point range at the buzzer in a 64-62 loss.

The Rattlers trailed by nine with 3:42 remaining and by six with 1:12 left, but went on a 7-2 run to trail 62-61 following an Isaiah Matthews and-one with five seconds left at the Rip Griffin Center.

St. Mary's quickly fouled to extend the game, and LCU's Beau Durham missed his second of two foul shots with three seconds left to leave the door open for StMU to win the game with a 3-pointer. But the Rattlers (4-5, 1-1 Heartland Conference) could not make the Chaps (5-3, 2-0) pay as time expired on Bolton's desperation attempt.

Marvin Binney led the Rattlers with 13 points, while Marvin Whitt and Kriston Minor scored 10 apiece. Joe Monroe led St. Mary's with six boards.

St. Mary's trailed 29-22 at the break and by as many as 14 points in the game, but did everything it could to mount a stunning comeback on the road. The Rattlers leaned on their stingy defense, which denied their opponent from hitting the 70-point plateau for the sixth time in nine games.

LCU shot 51.3 percent from the floor but on just 39 attempts, and went 2 for 11 from 3-point range. Nearly a third of the Chaps' points — 22 — came from the free-throw line, where they had 29 attempts.

Conversely, St. Mary's got off 56 attempts from the floor, but converted only 21 of them at a clip of 37.5 percent.

The Rattlers outscored the Chaps 40-35 in the second half.

St. Mary's will return to action on New Year's Day when it takes on Oklahoma Christian at 3 p.m. from Bill Greehey Arena.
