Rattlers' comeback falls short in double OT against OBU

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

COMMERCE, Texas — St. Mary's ferocious comeback bid fell short against Oklahoma Baptist in double overtime Monday.

The Rattler women's soccer team scored two late goals to force OT after trailing 3-1, but OBU's Allie Thompson struck for a breakaway goal in the 103rd minute for the victory.

The victory marked the end of the regular season for St. Mary's (8-9), who moves on to the Heartland Conference Tournament. The fourth-seeded Rattlers take on No. 1 seed and tournament host St. Edward's at Noon Thursday in Austin, Texas.

On Monday, the Rattlers saw back-to-back goals from Kristal Williams and Rachel Gurinsky nearly four minutes apart to tie the game 3-3 in the 79th minute. Gurinsky's tying goal, a far shot from the right of the box, was assisted by Williams and Brittney Lacek. Nearly four minutes earlier, Williams took a Lauren Peck pass and dribbled past defenders for her seventh goal of the season.

Peck scored her first goal of the season in the first half at the 39:22 mark to send St. Mary's into the half down 2-1. Thompson scored her first of two goals 15 minutes into the second half to push the lead back to 3-1.

Mariah Escajeda took over in the net for Alyssa Taramona late in the first half, putting in a good effort that helped allow the Rattlers' comeback. Escajeda yielded two goals but also collected six saves in 65:12 of work.
