Rattlers suffer heartbreak in season-ending OT loss to SEU

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

AUSTIN, Texas — St. Mary's Women's Soccer finished its 2014 season in dramatic fashion Thursday, falling in a hard-fought match to rival St. Edward's in overtime in the semifinals of the Heartland Conference Tournament.

The Rattlers were seeded No. 4 in the tournament, taking on No. 1 seed and long-standing rival St. Edward's which advanced to the final round to take on Dallas Baptist for the Heartland Conference crown, played at Noon Sunday.

But the Rattlers made the Toppers (13-4) earn the all-or-nothing "Battle of the Saints" in the semifinals, taking the match into overtime in a nail-biting contest.

The battle fired up in the final frame with the Hilltoppers scoring off a double-assisted strike three minutes into the half.

The Rattlers were awarded three straight corner kicks in the following minutes after the Toppers took a 1-0 lead and were able to connect on the third to tie it, 1-1.

Brittney Lacek (Jr., Gillette, Wyo.) headed in the game-tying goal from close range on Kaitie Kasperitis' (Sr., Corpus Christi, Texas) expertly placed corner kick in the 55th minute.

The Rattlers fended off SEU for the remaining of regulation as the Toppers attacked aggressively to rattle off eight shots in the final frame to the Snakes' one shot.

StMU charged out of the gate in overtime, trying to gain control of the ball but the Toppers were able handle the pressure, gaining three corner kicks.

The 94th minute brought the Toppers' third corner kick of overtime that caused a crowded box and enabled SEU's Katie Donahue to tap in the game-winning goal off a rebound that dribbled into the net.

Overall, the Hilltoppers outshot the Rattlers 14-4 and got the scare of an upset.

The heartbreaking loss ended the Rattlers' 2014 season with an 8-10 overall record.

The match was the career finales of three outstanding Rattler seniors, Kasperitis, Amy Adkins (El Paso, Texas) and Kyla Simek (Fort Worth, Texas) who like the rest of the Rattlers, brought all they had to their last "Battle of the Saints."
